WEEK 9 IMITATING JESUS CHRIST

Main Text: Matthew 20:20-28

Memory Verse: Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ – 1 Corinthians 11:1

Introduction

It is common knowledge that we become what we pay attention to in life. Thus, what we see around and listen to the most, model and shape our outlooks on life. Generally, how people dress, eat or even communicate are sometimes informed by the examples they might have observed from others. So far, we have established that the perfect example for life and character building is Jesus Christ. In the passage for our study, we will discuss the example of Jesus as far as servitude is concerned and how the lessons can help us to serve and to give our lives as ransom for many.

Questions For Discussion

  1. What was the mother of Zebedee’s sons request to Jesus? Verses 20-21
  1. What was Jesus’ response to this request? Verses 22-23
  1. How did the other disciples react to this request, and why? Verse 24
  1. What did Jesus tell His disciples when He called them together? Verses 25-28
  1. In what ways can we follow the example of Christ in humility and service?

Like most mothers, Zebedee’s wife wanted Jesus to promote her sons. The implication of her request was disturbing and Jesus had to let her appreciate it accordingly. The disciples of Jesus were obviously unhappy with how the situation was going. Jesus therefore, had to come in and help them to comprehend the fact that the greatest is the one who learns to serve. In other words, great people are those who do not allow their positions to affect their service to others negatively. Jesus Christ demonstrated this much more with His death on the cross, the finality and consummation of all service
